What types of dental mouthguards exist?
There are several types of dental mouthguards, each tailored for different needs:
- Stock Mouthguards: Pre-formed and ready to wear, these are the least expensive but offer the least protection and comfort since they are not customized.
- Boil and Bite Mouthguards: These can be bought at many sporting goods stores and offer a better fit than stock mouthguards. They are made from a thermoplastic material that softens in hot water and is formed in the mouth using pressure from your fingers, lips, and tongue.
- Custom-Fitted Mouthguards: Made by a dentist from a mold of your teeth, these offer the best fit, comfort, and protection. Although more expensive, they are highly recommended for athletes and individuals who require significant protection or suffer from severe bruxism.

Why are mouth guards important for athletes?
Mouthguards are crucial for athletes as they absorb and distribute the forces of impact that can cause broken teeth, jaw injuries, and cuts to the lips and gums, particularly in contact sports like football, hockey, and boxing. A well-fitted mouthguard can also help prevent more severe injuries such as concussions and neck injuries by cushioning blows that might cause the jaw to be driven into the skull. Using a mouthguard is an essential part of an athlete’s protective gear, safeguarding their oral and overall health during sports activities.

How do you clean a mouth guard or nightguard?
Keeping your nightguard clean is essential for oral hygiene and the longevity of the guard. Follow these steps to ensure your nightguard remains in optimal condition:
- Rinse and Brush: Rinse your nightguard under cool or lukewarm water after each use. Then, using a soft toothbrush (not the one you use for your teeth) and non-abrasive toothpaste or soap, gently brush the entire surface of the guard to remove any debris and plaque.
- Deep Clean: Regularly deep clean your nightguard by soaking it in an over-the-counter denture cleaner, a mixture of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, or a mouthguard cleaning solution as your dentist recommends. Soak it according to the product instructions, usually around 10-30 minutes.
- Dry and Store: After cleaning, allow the nightguard to air-dry completely to prevent bacterial growth. Store it in a ventilated case when not in use to protect it from damage and contamination.
- Check for Wear: Regularly inspect your nightguard for any signs of wear or damage. Over time, nightguards can degrade, necessitating replacement to ensure they continue to provide the intended protection.
