What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency includes any situation that requires immediate attention to relieve severe pain, stop ongoing tissue bleeding, or save a tooth that might otherwise be lost. Common emergencies include severe toothaches, chipped or broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, infections, and abscesses. If you are unsure whether your situation is an emergency, it’s important to err on the side of caution and contact a dental professional for advice.
Home Care for Dental Emergencies
In the meantime here are some things you can do at home to help with your dental emergency.
-
What if my tooth gets knocked out?
If your tooth gets knocked out, it’s important to act quickly to increase the chances of saving it. Here are the steps you should follow:
- Find the Tooth: Locate the knocked-out tooth and handle it carefully, holding it by the crown (the part that is normally visible in the mouth) and avoiding touching the root.
- Rinse Gently: If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline solution. Do not scrub or remove any attached tissue fragments.
- Reinsert if Possible: If possible, try to reinsert the tooth into the socket. Hold it in place by biting down gently on a clean cloth or gauze.
- Keep the Tooth Moist: If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist. You can place it in a container of milk or a tooth preservation solution or keep it in your mouth next to your cheek. Avoid using water, as it can damage the root cells.
- Seek Immediate Dental Care: Contact your dentist immediately or go to an emergency dental clinic. The chances of saving the tooth are highest if you see a dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.
At Refine Dental Studio, we are equipped to handle dental emergencies and will provide prompt and effective treatment to address your situation.

What if I have a chipped or cracked tooth?
If you have a chipped or cracked tooth, it’s important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage and address the issue promptly. Here’s what you should do:
- Rinse Your Mouth: Gently rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area.
- Manage Any Bleeding: If there is any bleeding, apply a piece of gauze to the area for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops. You can also use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
- Protect the Tooth: If the chipped or cracked tooth has a sharp or jagged edge, you can cover it with a piece of sugarless gum or wax paraffin to prevent it from cutting your tongue or the inside of your mouth.
- Avoid Certain Foods: Avoid chewing on the side of the mouth with the damaged tooth. Stick to soft foods and avoid biting down on hard or crunchy items.
- Pain Management: If you are experiencing pain, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums or the affected tooth, as it can burn the gum tissue.
- Seek Dental Care: Contact Refine Dental Studio as soon as possible. We will assess the damage and recommend the best course of treatment. This may include bonding, a crown, or other restorative procedures to repair and protect your tooth.
At Refine Dental Studio, we are committed to providing swift and effective care to address dental emergencies and restore smiles.
